HIV in the UK Today

Recorded: February 5th 2024

Duration: 34 mins

Dr Laura Waters joins Dr Naomi Sutton to introduce HIV and its evolution from the epidemic it once was to the manageable condition it is today, covering how HIV is acquired, the relationship between viral load and risk of transmission, and the life-changing message of U=U. Laura and Naomi dive into the UK’s progress of Getting to Zero by 2030 and how this can be achieved through effective testing, treatment, and prevention tools. The barriers to Getting to Zero are also discussed – stigma and bias, particularly affecting older heterosexual people who are often neglected in HIV care.

"The whole Getting to Zero concept is the idea that we can achieve zero new HIV transmissions. If we get enough people tested, enough people on treatment and in care; therefore undetectable, but also by giving prevention options to people who are at risk of HIV."
